The University of Punjab (PU) is in Chandigarh, and is a collegiate central university based in India. Punjab was born as Lahore University in 1882, the university was formed under the influence of Hunter Education Committee (1882–83) during the British Raj. The University has 78 teaching and research departments and 10 centers / chairs for teaching and research at the main campus in Chandigarh. There are 188 affiliated colleges spread across eight districts and union territory of the state of Punjab, including Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur in the state of Punjab. It is one of the first ranked university in India. The complex is residential, spread over 550 acres (2.2 km 2) in Sector 14 and 25 of Chandigarh city. The main administrative and educational buildings are located in Sector 14, next to the health center, a sports complex, hostel and residential accommodation.
