The largest river in India is the Ganges and pollution of the Ganges is a significant threat to human health and the larger environment. Severely pollutes this river with human waste and industrial pollutants, these rivers provide water to about 40% of India’s population in 11 states, and serve an estimated population of 500 million people. Today, the Ganges is considered the fifth most polluted river in the world. Indian photographer Raghubir Singh has stated that no one in India had talked about the Ganges being polluted until the late 1970s. However, pollution in the river has been an age-old and continuous process because by the time people were finally speaking of polluting the Ganges, areas of more than six hundred kilometers were essentially ecologically dead zones. Several initiatives have been taken to clear the river but have failed to produce the desired results. After being elected, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi confirmed working to clean the river and control pollution. Subsequently, the Namami Gange project was announced in the June 2014 budget by the Government of India. As of July 2016, an estimated and 2,958 crore (US $ 460 million) has been spent in various efforts to clean the river.
