The University of Kerala is located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state of Kerala. It was founded in 1937 by CPM Ramaswamy Iyer, one of the first 16 universities, by an announcement by the Maharaja of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balaram Varma, who was also the first Chancellor of the University, long before the birth of the state of Kerala in India. University College was started by Maharaja Swati Thirunal as Maharaja Independent School in 1834 with Mr. John Roberts.
