Gauhati University is located in Jalukbadi in Guwahati which is known as GU and is the oldest university in Northeast India. It was established in 1948. It is a teaching and affiliated university. It is a grade “A” recognized under the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The university has 341 affiliated colleges offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the faculties of arts, science, commerce, law, medicine, engineering and technology. Gauhati University has also been a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The annual demand of the Assam Association held at Sivasagar in Gauhati was first made by the public in 1917. In 1940, the government carried out the task of collecting relevant information on the selection of the site and related matters. The university was established in 1948 by an Act of the State Legislature of the Government of Assam. The first court meeting of this university was held on 26 January 1948, which is considered to be the Foundation Day in the old Sudarsan Hall of Cotton College, Guwahati.
