The Banaras Hindu University is located in Banaras, India.Formerly Central Hindu College is located in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi and was a public central university. It was jointly established in 1916 by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of Darbhanga, Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sundar Lal and Annie Besant, the British theosophist and founder of the Home Rule League. It is the largest residential university in Asia, with over 30,000 students living on campus.Spread over 1,300 acres (5.3 km2), the main campus of the university is built on Kashi Naresh, the hereditary ruler of Banaras, is built on land donated by Prabhu Narayan Singh (“Kashi” is an alternate name for Benaras or Varanasi). The southern campus, spread over 2,700 acres (11 km 2), hosts the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Center for Agricultural Sciences) and is located in Barkachha in Mirzapur district, about 60 km (37 mi) from Banaras. BHU is organized in six institutes and 14 faculties (streams) and around 140 departments. As of 2017, the total student enrollment in the university from 48 countries is 27,359. There are more than 75 hostels for the students staying here.
